Speculation is once again rife on whether Israel or the US will launch air strikes on Iran. The Middle East could be on the brink of horrifying events in the next period triggered by such action. SP Newsletter No.222 The world faces the horrifying prospect of major climate change with its potential for catastrophic impact on food production and living conditions across the world. Yet, the political leaders of the major capitalist economies failed to agree on any meaningful action on this question at the recent G8 meeting in Japan. The following SP pamphlet ‘What is Socialism?’ was originally written in 2005. This is an ideal introduction to the ideas of socialism and we are happy to publish the text for the first time here at socialistpartyaustralia.org. This pamphlet is also available in hard copy for $3 from our National Office. The Sri Lankan government, continuing to bombard the north of the country in its 25 year-long civil war, has been faced with a new challenge. On Thursday 10 July, a warning general strike was held demanding increased wages to cover recent massive price rises. The ‘Haves and Have Yachts’ lead totally different lives to the rest of us. Last year an American journalist wrote a book about how the super-rich now live in their own world of gated mansions with butlers and servants, private schools and hospitals. He called this nation ‘Richistan’. Government leaders from the world’s most powerful capitalist countries have been meeting at the G8 summit. They are discussing a world heading rapidly for recession, the climate change issue and the world food crisis where growing starvation and upwardly spiralling prices have caused huge protest movements, particularly in the world’s poorest countries. SP Newsletter No.221 This pamphlet, produced in May 2008, is a collation of material written by members of the Committee for a Workers’ International (CWI) in Australia, the United States and Britain. SP is the Australian section of the CWI. We are happy to publish it for the first time on line. Teachers in Western Australia are in dispute with the State Labor government over wages and conditions. They have already taken industrial action by staging a stop work in February. |
