Hong Kong’s low pay scandal!

Hong Kong is a capitalist’s dream, with one of the world’s lowest levels of corporation tax, at just 16%, and an administration that refuses even to utter the term ‘welfare state’. Yet despite alleged economic ‘good times’ – GDP growth was 6.3 per cent last year – over a quarter of Hong Kong’s workforce is stuck in low-paid jobs with salaries lower in real terms than a decade ago.

Ireland: SP calls for NO vote on Lisbon Treaty

The treaty of Lisbon was signed on 13 December 2007 at a summit in Lisbon, Portugal and is due to come into force in 2009, if successfully ratified by all EU member states. The treaty was drawn up to replace the draft European constitution after that was thrown out by voters in France and the Netherlands in 2005. Ireland will hold a referendum on the treaty on 12 June 2008.

Sacked stewards on hunger strike in Belfast

Three sacked Airport shop stewards in Belfast, Northern Ireland have resumed their protest to achieve payment of legal costs and hardship money from their union. After being rushed to hospital in a serious condition, one of the workers Gordon McNeil, has signed himself out of hospital and rejoined the protest.

Since the Israeli state was founded 60 years ago, many Jewish people around the world have moved there on the promise of prosperity and security. Yet despite Israel having one of the strongest military machines in the world, Israeli Jews do not feel secure, and a huge wealth gap means that a large section of the population lives in poverty, including one third of the Holocaust survivors.
