Even those fortresses of global capitalism, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, are worried about food prices rising around the world. Wheat prices went up by 130% in the past year, while rice prices rose by three-quarters.

Over 700 workers from aircraft manufacturing giant Boeing are currently on strike at the Fishermans Bend plant in Melbourne. This morning at a mass meeting the workers agreed to defy Federal Court orders telling them to return to work. These workers now face possible fines and other serious legal action.

This is probably Pilger’s most overtly political book. Like his previous works Hidden Agendas, Heroes and Distant Voices this one contains a series of stand alone pieces highlighting the plight of oppressed people around the world whose voices are so seldom heard is the establishment media.

Nothing is going right for the Chinese regime in this Olympic year. While China’s economy is still, based on current projections, expanding at double-digit rates, the global capitalist crisis arising from the bursting of the giant credit bubble in the United States gets closer to China every week.
