Two of the detained student leaders of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife were released from prison on February 21 after their bail conditions had been met earlier in the day. Olatunde Dairo, the Public Relations Officer of the Students’ Union, and Taiwo Hassan Soweto, Coordinator of the Education Rights Campaign, both members of the Democratic Socialist Movement, had been arrested and held in prison since October 11, 2007.

In January of this year, the government of Sri Lanka returned to pursuing full scale war against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). Contrary to claims at the time by the Sinhala chauvinist president, Mahinda Rajapakse, its unilateral withdrawal from the Cease Fire Agreement (CFA) had nothing to do with violations of the by the LTTE.
