The CWI extends socialist and revolutionary greetings on May Day 2006, to all workers and youth and to the oppressed peoples of the world! This 1 May will see hundreds of thousands of US workers and youth, the majority from an immigrant background, take part in demonstrations, as part of a general strike against a proposed law to clamp down on immigration. Victorian State election - We need your help

The SP office at Trades Hall in Melbourne was packed this afternoon as a diverse gathering of public housing tenants, labour movement activists and home-owning residents discussed the ideas and principles of our campaign. We also discussed the language we use to get our ideas across. More than half the meeting volunteered to join our election committee.

Iraq: Condition critical

Despite the spin from Washington, London and Canberra, an internal report from the US embassy and military command in Baghdad shows that Iraq’s ‘political, economic and security situation’ in six of the country’s 18 provinces is “serious” and “critical” in one. Only in three Kurdish-controlled areas in the north is the situation described as “stable”. (more…)

Sri Lanka: Bomb blast in Colombo points to war

On Tuesday, 25 April, a suicide bomber attacked the car in which the top Sri Lankan army commander was travelling. Eight people were killed and the commander, Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka, was seriously injured. Three others are in a critical condition and at least twenty three were wounded. The bomber, assumed to be from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, penetrated deep into the Army headquarters complex.
