Late in 2005, the race debate was again propelled to the forefront of popular culture, after racially motivated violence erupted on the streets of Sydney. Fuelled by the relentless rants of ’shock jocks’ and ‘gutter’ tabloid journalism, underlying tensions between Anglo-Australian and Muslim youth erupted as tit-for-tat style random attacks became commonplace in two nights of rioting.

Expect protests at ?StolenWealth Games?

In May 2005, indigenous activists met at Trades Hall in Melbourne and called for mass protests of Indigenous and non-Indigenous people aimed at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, which represents an exceptional opportunity to publicly highlight the plight of Aboriginal Australia. Prominent Aboriginal activist Gary Foley told the crowd, ‘Native title is not land rights, reconciliation is not justice and the struggle for Indigenous rights in Australia continues’
