The presidential election campaign in Sri Lanka got into full swing last Friday and so did the campaign of the United Socialist Party (CWI, Sri Lanka). It was Nomination Day - a grand ceremonial occasion, when every candidate must hand in their papers to the Election Commissioner and wait for their nomination to be accepted.

K.Murale died at the Selangor Medical Centre because his family did not have enough money to stimulate the private hospital to give him adequate treatment he needs. His life was kept in ransom while his wife was told to put in a deposit first. The pleading and appeal of a desperate wife did not move the hospital authorities. He died. He was 39 years old and leaves behind two children aged 11 and 12. (more…)

At first, all the news reports mentioned that Muzafarabad, the capital city of Pakistani Occupied Kashmir, was the worst hit. What tiny amounts of aid and help were provided by the authorities came there. But then a cable news team found their way to Bagh district and filmed the devastation there.

Yarra Council, dubbed Victoria’s most left wing council, tonight voted unanimously to only give contracts to companies with collective agreements. The motion was moved and driven by Australia’s only socialist councillor, Stephen Jolly of the Socialist Party, but also supported by the 3 Green, 3 ALP and 2 independents.
