IN A sensational victory for Chinese workers and international campaigners, ten young workers (the oldest is 23 years old) in Guangdong province, jailed for protesting against pay cuts and medieval conditions at shoe factories owned by Stella International, were freed on New Year?s Eve.

Last night’s Council’s-run public meeting on the Banco development was a great success for the community. 200+ locals piled into Collingwood Town Hall past an excellent Socialist Party stall and banner, and reading the SP leaflet on the issue at hand. (more…)

A meeting of child care users and advocates met today, Sunday 20th March, in North Fitzroy to discuss the crisis. There are 500 families without places in Yarra at the moment and we want Council to work hard to fix the problem, which can’t get around the question of spending money on the issue. After years of demonising migrants John Howard is now so worried about Australia running out of workers that he now wants to embark on an international recruitment drive.The coalition wants 20,000 additional skilled workers to be allowed into the country next financial year, taking the total skilled migrant intake to nearly 100,000.
