ALP push for new anti-democratic laws at Yarra

The Finance and Governance Committee meeting of Yarra Council on Monday night saw high drama and a walkout as the ALP began their push for a new local law to effectively cut residents out of Council meetings. The proposed law will also introduce harsh punishments for minority Councillors who are deemed by their political opponents to be breaching the vaguely worded ‘Code of Conduct’.

Last nights Council meeting heard from Joan Doyle, State Secretary of the Posties Union (CWU), who spoke about the union’s campaign to stop Australia Post’s replacement of 17 fulltime posties covering Abbotsford and Fitzroy with casual staff on four hour shifts and 15% less pay. (more…)

On a day of political turmoil for the Victorian Labor government yesterday over 400 people attended a rally on a cold winters night outside Safeway supermarket at Smith Street, Collingwood calling for State government funding for a cultural centre, sobering-up facility and 24-hour indigenous run bus.

The following is a report of the July Yarra City Council meeting from Socialist Party Councillor Stephen Jolly.
Last nights Council meeting saw a victory of sorts on the battle to save St. Andrews Kindergarten. The Councillors, under huge pressure from the people of Clifton Hill and the surrounding areas, voted to relocate the Kindergarten building via a house removalist from its current site to a new site next to the Scout Hall in Walker St, Clifton Hill.
