Yarra budget: Labor and Greens set to jack up rates again

Yarra Council voted 6-1 on Tuesday night to put out a draft budget for public consideration. Socialist Party Councillor Stephen Jolly was the sole voice of opposition to the 3 Greens and 3 Labor Councillors present. Both the Independent Councillors were absent.

YCAT rally in Fitzroy a success!

Over 200 residents attended a rally in Fitzroy yesterday despite the cold weather and drizzling rain. The rally was organised by the Yarra Campaign Against the Tunnel (YCAT) to protest against the State Government’s plans to build a tunnel linking the Eastern Freeway to Melbourne’s western Suburbs.

Another neo-liberal budget at Yarra

On Tuesday night Yarra Council voted 8-1 in favour of this year’s budget. As a Socialist Party Councillor I was the only one who voted against. Despite describing the financial state as “strong”, the budget added extra pain on the backs of local residents and community groups.
