The Socialist Party has launched an exciting new campaign to turn the Fitzroy Town Hall into a centre for the arts, music and culture in the City of Yarra (Melbourne). Yarra Council voted 6-1 on Tuesday night to put out a draft budget for public consideration. Socialist Party Councillor Stephen Jolly was the sole voice of opposition to the 3 Greens and 3 Labor Councillors present. Both the Independent Councillors were absent. VOTE 1 Socialist Party in Yarra Last weekend, the Socialist Party (SP) launched its election campaign in the City of Yarra (Melbourne). Steve Jolly, a sitting councilor, is campaigning to re-win his seat. Denise Dudley and Anthony Main are also standing as SP candidates in the election on November 29. The rally was organised by the Yarra Campaign Against the Tunnel (YCAT) to protest against the State Government’s plans to build a tunnel linking the Eastern Freeway to Melbourne’s western Suburbs. On Tuesday night Yarra Council voted 8-1 in favour of this year’s budget. As a Socialist Party Councillor I was the only one who voted against. Despite describing the financial state as “strongâ€, the budget added extra pain on the backs of local residents and community groups. By SP Councillor, Stephen Jolly Almost 150 residents from the inner city Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy rallied on Sunday February 17 to save one of the only parks in the area - Condell Park. The Finance and Governance Committee meeting of Yarra Council on Monday night saw high drama and a walkout as the ALP began their push for a new local law to effectively cut residents out of Council meetings. The proposed law will also introduce harsh punishments for minority Councillors who are deemed by their political opponents [...] |
