On Friday March 30, Saturday March 31 and Sunday April 1, the Socialist Party will hold its annual National Conference at the Fitzroy Town Hall in Melbourne. The Fitzroy Town Hall is located at 201 Napier Street.

The aim of the event is to analyse the current political climate in order to better prepare ourselves for the period ahead. The following sessions focus on the situation in Australia, China and the world. They are all open to the public and we encourage all of our supporters to attend.

Friday March 30

7.00pm – 9.00pm: China on the Brink of social explosion - A socialist analysis.
Speaker: Vincent Kolo, senior editor of chinaworker.info

Vincent has authored a number of books and countless articles on China and has visited the country on many occasions. In 2009 he was refused entry to China and his visa revoked on the grounds that he represents a “potential threat to national security”.

Vincent will speak on the economic, political and social crisis gripping China and look at the ramifications this will have on Australia.

Socialism 2011 will be held at RMIT University in Melbourne on October 28, 29 & 30. The event, which is sponsored by the Socialist Party, will showcase the socialist alternative to a world in crisis.

Featuring a range of local and international speakers, the forum will examine how large parts of the world came to be engulfed by an economic, social and political crisis. Meetings will also look in detail at the situation in Australia and in the Asia Pacific region.

John Fox and the Medicine Bag, Lloyd Bosch and the Glorious Women & theDEADareMANY support the SP election campaign!

On Friday November 12 the Trades Hall bar is hosting a benefit gig for Stephen Jolly’s election campaign. Steve is the Socialist Party candidate for the seat of Richmond.

The night will feature three bands and two DJ’s for a combination of blues, indie folk-rock and magic beats to dance the night away. The event will kick off at 8pm. Its $10 waged $5 unwaged and kids are free.

The Socialist Party will once again be holding its annual event - Socialism 2010. This year the event will take place in Melbourne over the weekend of October 1, 2 & 3.

The event will feature four main public sessions on the crisis facing world capitalism, the history and ideas of the Socialist Party, the political situation in Australia and the issues facing working people in Greece. On Saturday October 2 we will also launch our Richmond State Election campaign.

With none of the underlying economic problems being solved, and another downturn looming, it is vital that workers and young people are prepared for upcoming struggles. This event will focus on understanding the current situation so that we can be better prepared to effect social change in the future.

Please note we have modified the agenda slightly to accommodate the AFL Grand Final replay.

The Melbourne Branch of the Socialist Party will host a public meeting on the politics of the Black Panther Party for Self Defence. The details are: 7pm Wednesday July 28 @ Trades Hall, corner of Lygon & Victoria Streets Carlton South.

SP member Anthony Main will kick off the discussion and look at the history and ideas of the largest black revolutionary organisation that ever existed. Come along to learn the lessons of history and discuss how we can advance the black struggle today.

Anti-racist rally in Melbourne this Friday!

Socialist Party members are helping to organise an action against a group of racists who are planning to rally “against immigration and Islam”. Anti-racist activists will meet outside Flinders Street Station in the Melbourne CBD at 12 noon on Friday April 9th.

Capitalism in Australia means low pay, casualisation and skyrocketing rents for the majority. Across the globe it means war, mass poverty and environmental destruction. It is becoming clearer to many that that solutions to these problems won’t be found under the current system.

If you’re looking for ideas to change the world then come to our Introduction to Marxism day school in Melbourne. This school will be of interest to anyone who is interested in the ideas of Marxism or to anyone who wants know more about the work of the Socialist Party.

In early February thousands of people took part in Melbourne’s annual Pride March. This march symbolises the efforts of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) community and a movement that has struggled for decades to win sexual equality and challenge homophobia.

But why is it that despite widespread support for the LGBTI community the Rudd government forbids marriage between same sex couples? The answer lies in the fact that both Labor and the Liberals see the ‘nuclear family’ as the cornerstone of the capitalist system. Oppression based on sexuality also stems from the needs of the ruling class in society.

When Kevin Rudd came to office in 2007 many hoped that we would start to see some progressive change in Australia. Unfortunately Rudd has proved himself to be little different to Howard.

For example, Workchoices has been merely rebadged while draconian laws against construction workers remain fully in tact. At the same time OH&S laws are beginning to be undermined by the Labor government.
