New research is claiming that concentrations of carbon dioxide (the main greenhouse gas, CO2) will remain high for at least 1,000 years, even if greenhouse gases are eliminated in the next few decades. Urgent action needed to protect the environment! The Victorian government’s plan to build one of the biggest desalination plants in the world, in South Gippsland, appears at face value a solution to Victoria’s water crisis. Although it’s despite Labor’s election mandate of 2006 to outright reject the desalination plant. SP Newsletter No.266 A new report from the Global Humanitarian Forum warns that we are in the middle of a “silent crisis” as climate change is killing 300,000 a year. Climate change and its effects are already impacting on the world. The report states that more than 300 million people are already seriously affected by climate change and [...] Radical action on climate change was central to Labor’s 2007 election promises. The environment was second only to the scrapping John Howard’s Work Choices legislation. Not only has Rudd failed to get rid of the anti-worker laws, but the proposed Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) is a joke. An urgent programme to tackle climate change is desperately needed. The latest scientific evidence indicates that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the leading climate prediction body, has been conservative in its analysis. In fact, we face a rapidly deteriorating situation. Barack Obama put the environment at the centre of his US presidential election programme by pledging to bring in a ‘Green New Deal’ that could tackle the threat of climate change while generating many new jobs to combat the growing economic recession. The drought afflicting southern Australia has now been officially declared the worst since records began and global warming is to blame. SP member Yorran Pelekenakis recently interviewed RMIT academic and public transport advocate Paul Mees. Paul spoke to Yorran about the Victorian State Government commissioned Eddington Report and public transport in Melbourne. |
