Urgent action needed to protect the environment!
The above headline may read like the title of a dodgy 1980’s pop song, but the reality is much worse. The Kyoto Protocol was the ‘green’ buzz-word of the 1990’s, an agreement among the world’s capitalist leaders which was supposed to solve the global warming crisis.

60 years on – The lessons for today
The 1949 coal miners strike saw 23,000 workers withdraw their labour between June 27 and August 15 of that year. The dispute dominated Australian politics at the time and saw elements of revolution and counter-revolution which has been a rarity on Australian soil. It also marked a turning point between two distinct periods in working class struggle.

Draft thesis for the CWI European Bureau meeting taking place next week
For 30 years, but particularly since 1989 and the collapse of Stalinism, neo-liberal capitalism – summed up in the so-called ‘Washington Consensus’ – has held sway throughout world capitalism. Indeed, the capitalists and their ideologues, as well as the majority of trade union and ‘labour’ leaders, fell in behind the idea that deregulated capitalism was the best, the most efficient system possible for distributing goods and services to the peoples of the world.
