SP Councillor fights closure of Collingwood centre

A community service of battling Collingwood residents will close at the end of the month unless the Government rescues it, a local councillor said last night. The Collingwood Community Information Centre, which Jesuit Social Services set up in 2002 to help the poor search for jobs and services, is $25,000 in the red despite getting about $45,000 from the City of Yarra.
The staff can speak 39 languages between them.
City of Yarra councillor Stephen Jolly called on the State Government to save the centre.
“It’s all very well for the Government to spend millions on the Commonwealth Games and tonnes on PR for their next election, but this is a true Labor heartland and it’s time they gave something back,” he said.
Cr Jolly said the Council would give the centre more money if the Government saved it.
The State Government did not comment late last night.
