A Socialist Party public meeting was held two weeks ago on the massive Atherton Gardens Public Housing estate in Fitzroy, Melbourne. The meeting followed a long period of consultation with residents by SP. It agreed on a log of claims for this years’ Yarra Council budget with the top four demands being:1. An indoor sports center for Yarra



2. More Council resources for Council-run or community-based child care in Yarra

3. Greater support for public housing tenants in Yarra in terms of advocacy with the State government, community grants and more direct support.



4. Improving our environment - including recycling available for all residents and businesses; bring back rubbish collection into Council control; more action on dog poo and glass on our streets; more resources to enable more policing of footpath trading and other by-laws.

SP will be working with residents this year to aggressively fight for these demands to be implemented.
