Malaysia: PSM legal battle latest

SP in Australia has warm relations with the PSM (Socialist Party Malaysia). This article from the PSM explains the latest in their legal battle to win registration as a legal party in Malaysia.APPEALS COURT FIXES PSM CASE ON APRIL 10, 2006

The Appeal Courts - the second highest court in the country has fixed April 10 to hear PSM appeal against the Home Ministry which is headed by the current Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

In 1999, the current Prime MIniter cowardly denied Parti Sosialis Malaysia to be registred as a political party. No reason was given then. When PSM took the Minister to the courts on the issue of freedom of Association, the Home Minister cowardly said that based on police reports, PSM is a threat to National Security and these information are clasiffied.

PSM then filed a case in the High Court. Its protem Chairperson Comrade Dr. Mohd. Nasir Hashim filed a case to get a certiorari dan mandamus but the party lost the case in 13-1-2003 when the High Court Judge Datuk Abdul Hamid Said dismissed the case with cost.

The party lawyers then worked very hard to get an early appeal date. Two letters of urgency was send. On 15 November 2005, after all other attempts failed, the party supporters staged a peaceful demonstration inside the Palace of Justice. Just after ten days after that , the party case was called for case management and 8 December , PSM Counsel Ragu Kesavan said that April 10, 2006 has been fixed to hear the party’s case.

PSM is looking forward for the date. The party has been waiting since 1998, seven years ago to be registered.
