Solidarity needed for HK workers
Previous posts on this web site explain the situation at Gold Peak. Please use the model letter below to get messages of support asap!! Letters should be send to: Gold Peak Industries (Holdings) Limited, Mr Victor Lo Chung Wing, 8/F Gold Peak Building, 30 Kwai Wing Road, Kwai Chung, Hong Kong, Fax: 2489 1879/24232660, gp@goldpeak.com.
To whom it may concern date
It has been drawn to my attention by the Committee for a Workers International (CWI) that workers at Gold Peak have been treated with the utmost disrespect. I am very concerned about these developments. I have not only learnt that workers were forced to undress and take a shower in order to give a urine sample. But I have also been made aware that when workers protested against this humiliating treatment by the security staff, they were surrounded by the police and denied permission to go to the toilet.
As a member of ??..I will inform the members I represent and make sure that they are fully informed about this unacceptable behaviour.
I will also address the highly concerning question of high levels of cancer causing cadmium which occurred in a number of cases. The high cadmium results seem to stem from handling this particular chemical without the necessary precautions. I am likewise concerned about the fact that workers employed on the mainland are denied the right to join a trade union.
I will make sure that this case is published as widely as possible.
I am also urging you to meet the following demands:
· Stop the mass poisoning of Gold Peak workers
· Stop physical mistreatment and threats against Gold Peak workers.
· Meet in full the workers’ demands for compensation and a medical insurance fund to cover expensive treatment.
· For health and safety training to be under trade union control - for independent unions at Gold Peak and other China-based factories.
I will follow the events with great interest and am eager to hear your response.
Yours sincerely,
