60th Anniversary of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
On August 6th 1945 the United States dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Three days later on August 9th another bomb was dropped on the city of Nagasaki. In Hiroshima alone over 80,000 people were killed and by the end of 1945 at least another 70,000 people had died from radiation sickness. It is estimated that almost 250,000 have died since then from the devastating effects of the bomb.
This week marks the 60th anniversaries of these atrocities and demonstrations have been organised in all major cities. SP will be joining those remembering the working class people that were killed and protesting the continuing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan today.
