1500 attend same sex marriage rally in Melbourne

1500 people gathered at the State Library on Saturday March 13 to demand equal marriage rights for same sex couples. The protestors then marched through the city to the Registry Office on Spring Street.
The rally’s atmosphere was vibrant and energetic. People from the LGBTI community marched side by side with heterosexual people to protest against the stance of the Rudd Government.

One speaker commented that the current laws promote the idea that love between straight couples is more ‘pure’ than love between partners from the same sex. This is encouraging discrimination towards people from the LGBTI community.
People from the LGBTI community should be afforded equal rights. They should be able to choose if they want to get married or not.
The Socialist Party demands that same sex marriage be legalised in Australia. We stand against all forms of discrimination on every front.
The next rally will be held at 1pm on May 15 outside the State Library in Melbourne. This will be part of a national day of action. If you are against homophobia then we look forward to seeing you there!
