Why I joined the Socialist Party
I come from a Labor voting family in Preston (Melbourne). In our house the rights of workers and social justice are things we always talk about. The problem is that Labor doesn’t actually represent ordinary people anymore. They are a big business party and just another cog in the capitalist machine.
By Joel Simmons, Socialist Party Melbourne
This realisation led me to develop an interest in real left wing politics, which in turn led me to discover that there were many socialist organisations in Melbourne. It was pretty clear to me that the only party that actually acted and wasn’t just all talk was the Socialist Party.
I saw all the good work that had been done in the Yarra area and all the fantastic work that had been done for young workers through UNITE. I knew that this was something I wanted to be involved in. I wanted to be part of action to bring down the outdated capitalist system rather than just ineffectual sloganeering.
Capitalism operates to benefit a select few, while showing complete disregard for the majority of the population and for the well being of our planet. Joining the Socialist Party would be the best course of action for anyone who is fed up with the the capitalist system.
