Why I joined the Socialist Party

I have always had a strong social conscience, and issues of hunger, peace, equality, freedom and environment are more pressing now than at any other time in the post-war period.

What attracted me to the Socialist Party was their strong convictions relating to grassroots accountability and local democracy. In Yarra, where the party has a Councillor, SP makes themselves available to all residents a weekly basis via a street stall. In the Council meetings SP regularly votes as the sole opposition to the interests of big business.

The Socialist Party is a strong supporter of the trade union movement and their work campaigning for better wages and conditions for young people and migrant workers is extremely important. We are at a crossroads on issues like the environment and the global financial crisis and it is time that society sees capitalism as a system that has failed in addressing these massive problems. War will become more prevalent as the fight for resources, stability and international hegemony heightens and living standards deteriorate globally. Not only will capitalism fail to address these issues, but it is the impetus behind them. That’s why we need to look at socialist solutions.
