The leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, in his Heroes’ Day speech, has warned of an end to the cease-fire and of the ‘Tigers’ renewing their demand for independence. The Sri Lankan prime minister has made a call for talks to be renewed. The situation remains extremely tense. US economy: Heading for recession?

The US economy slowed down sharply before the mid-term elections.
Data for the third quarter of 2006 showed that gross domestic product (GDP) grew only 1.6% (at an annualized rate) compared with 2.6% in the previous quarter. Recently, it is true, the growth-rate has fluctuated quite a lot. But the latest figures suggest the possibility of a recession.

Iraq war heightens terror threat

Howard, Bush and Blair, the coalition of the willing, are all guilty of giving aid and comfort to terrorists around the world. The invasion of Iraq has given terrorists of all persuasions and in particular al-Qaeda a new source of inspiration. This inspiration attracts young people from around the world to their cause.

Thousands oppose the policies of the G20

Over 3,000 demonstrators attended the main protest against the G20 in Melbourne on Saturday. The demonstration began at the State Library to hear a series of speeches and then marched through the city centre towards the Grand Hyatt Hotel where the G20 summit was being held.
