Happy New Year from SP!
The Socialist Party sends revolutionary New Year’s greetings to all of our members and supporters. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who assisted us with our work during 2007.
In 2007 SP members were heavily involved in the campaign to end the rein of the Howard government. We also campaigned against the hated Work Choices laws, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, global warming and racism. On top of this we fought countless local battles against the effects of cuts and privatisations being implemented by both bosses and governments.
Despite the fact that Howard is now gone, all of these fights still remain. These problems will not be solved by making minor changes. They are in fact symptoms of a sick capitalist system. This is why the Socialist Party not only fights against the day to day effects of the system but also for a socialist world free from the horrors of war, poverty and environmental destruction.
This makes the Socialist Party unique in the labour movement and in society. We do not put our hope in politicians or business leaders. We believe that working people have the power to make their own history. To do this we need to build the labour movement and revolutionary organisations like the Socialist Party. This task is as important today as it ever was.
The Socialist Party goes into 2008 with an optimistic outlook. Our analysis of world events and the state of the economy has been totally accurate. As we move into a period of economic slowdown, the effects will have profound effects on the consciousness of working people and lead them to ask questions about the credibility of the system.
History also shows that workers will not allow bosses to off load economic losses onto them without a fight. It is clear that we are moving into a period where there will be more struggle and a better reception for socialist ideas.
We urge people to consider joining the ranks of the Socialist Party in 2008. On your own your contribution will be limited but in a revolutionary organisation you can not only be part of the fight, but part of the process of changing the world.
Let’s make 2008 a year of struggle, solidarity and socialism!
Yours in unity
