Joe McDonald to launch End Low Pay campaign
The Socialist Party in Perth is set to launch its End Low Pay campaign with a public meeting on Monday November 19. Speakers will include CFMEU Assistant Secretary Joe McDonald who was recently expelled from the ALP.
McDonald was expelled from the ALP last week following a vote by the ALP national executive committee. He allegedly made “inappropriate and unacceptable” comments outside a Perth court.
Asked if he had a word for the Prime Minister, McDonald said “John’s gone. You know that. I’ll be back”. John Howard seized on the comments as proof union bosses would cash in on a Rudd Labor win at the federal election. If only!
Coincidently McDonald had just been acquitted in the first of six trials for trespassing on Perth building sites, after having his right of entry permit revoked by the federal court.
After attending court again on November 19 McDonald will join representatives from the Socialist Party as well as several community groups at the launch of the End Low Pay campaign. The meeting will start at 7.30pm on Monday the 19th and be held at the Hellenic Association Club (next to Unions WA) 75 Stirling St Perth.
The main demands of the End Low Pay campaign are –
-For the immediate introduction of a $16 per hour minimum wage as a step towards a $20 per hour minimum wage.
-For a joint campaign with unions and community groups to recruit to trade unions.
-For all casuals to have the option of transferring to permanent full time or part time jobs after a period of six months.
-For the scrapping of Australian Workplace Agreements (AWAs)
