Students told about Melbourne Uni cuts
Thousands of prospective students attended the Open Day at Melbourne University today. Socialist Party students assisted student union members to hand out tens of thousands of leaflets to let the public know what the administration’s glossy brochures don’t say. That is that the new ‘Melbourne Model will mean cuts to courses, student and staff numbers, the scrapping of arts subjects and exhorbitant fees!

Also in attendance were over 60 security staff, 50 under cover police, plus a strong police presence in uniform. Physical and verbal threats were made to student unionists for ‘chalking’ the pavement. Despite these bullying tactics by the university there were banners and a RIP memorial for arts courses. The very busy student union information stall let hundreds of people know about the about cuts and fees and our message was well received by the public.
